Ingredients:
- 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced into 1/4 inch wedges (approx. 3 lbs)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Once coated, drizzle in the melted butter and stir until the apples look glossy.
- Pour the apple mixture directly into a room-temperature 10-inch cast iron skillet. Press the apples down firmly with a spatula to remove air gaps and ensure the fruit is spread evenly to the edges of the pan.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Using a pastry cutter or fingertips, work the cold cubed butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs roughly the size of peas.
- Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples, covering the entire surface.
- Slide the skillet into the center rack of the oven and bake for 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
